7 Benefits of Celery Juice, The New Health Elixir

7 Benefits of Celery Juice, The New Health Elixir

Some people hate it, some people love it, some people don’t even notice it, yet celery is currently becoming one of the most unassuming health heroes of the day. With over 35,000 Instagram posts alone touting the super powers of this fibrous stalk, people are starting to take notice and for good reason.

These 7 benefits of celery juice promote another plant-based choice to empower your body. Whether at the juice bar counter or for that in-home blended morning beverage, celery juice feeds your system right.

Antioxidant

It would probably be correct to assume that every edible plant holds some type of antioxidant rich compound. Although celery is often tossed aside as a garnish or ‘peripheral’ vegetable, the antioxidants it offers raises this vegetable to a whole new level.

According to ‘A Review of the Antioxidant Activity of Celery’, published in the Journal of Evidence Based Complimentary & Alternative Medicine  (2017) it was concluded that,

“This study investigated further the properties of celery leaves and seeds. Celery, because of compounds such as caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, apigenin, luteolin, tannin, saponin, and kaempferol, has powerful antioxidant characteristics,”

Anti-Inflammatory

Bet you didn’t think this little crunchy stalk could help reduce systemic inflammation. Turns out it is pretty good at it.

Live Science reports that,

“A study published in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research suggests that celery juice and celery extracts may help reduce activity by tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-A) and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-KB), proteins that are linked to inflammatory problems. Another study published in Planta Medica suggests that the luteolin in celery may be able to inhibit the production of COX-2, an enzyme that triggers inflammation.”

Bone Help

Your bones and celery have something in common. They both contain exactly 23% of sodium which may be a clue as to why they are yet another vegetable that looks like the body part they can help. Celery also contains calcium and vitamin K which are essential for bone metabolism and can protect you from developing osteoarthritis. This unassuming vegetable is also a powerhouse when it comes to heat. Heating most vegetables can change the organic quality yet celery is unaffected by heat, able to retain its vitamins so eating it raw or in a cooked meal is just as beneficial.

Memory

As you age you probably feel you will take all the help you can get when it comes to retaining your memory. Crunchy celery can be an excellent addition to your memory health. It all comes down to a compound that is abundant in celery called luteolin.

A study by researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign found that this little ingredient could help combat age-related memory deficits. According to the study,

“A diet rich in the plant compound luteolin reduces age-related inflammation in the brain and related memory deficits by directly inhibiting the release of inflammatory molecules in the brain”

University of Illinois animal sciences professor Rodney Johnson, who led the study commented,

“When we provided the old mice luteolin in the diet it reduced inflammation in the brain and at the same time restored working memory to what was seen in young cohorts,”

Detox – Weight Loss – Blood Purifier

Celery can offer the health trifecta of detoxification, blood purification, and weight loss. Another unique compound found in celery is called coumarins.

In an open peer-reviewed research publication called IntechOpen it was stated that,

“Coumarins have been increasingly attracting special interest as phytochemicals due to their underlying outstanding contributions in the prevention and treatment of diseases.”

Food Matters reports that,

“Celery contains a particular compound called coumarins which promotes the activity of white blood cells and assists the vascular system. This helps the blood flow, reduces blood pressure and purifies the bloodstream.”

Celery juice is very hydrating as well as alkalizing which means it is capable of maintaining a healthy PH balance. This keeps the body in a less acidic state which creates an inhospitable environment for disease. At the same time it’s high fiber content helps detox your system, primarily your large intestines, by ‘dragging’ out waste and toxins that may otherwise attach and stubbornly remain on your intestine walls. The combination of blood purification and detoxification assists a clean diet and exercise program in maintaining healthy weight.

Drink a glass of celery juice per day to add to your healthy regiment. In due time you should see a difference that may apply to some or all of these 7 benefits of celery juice.
