So, what exactly is macular degeneration?

More specifically this disease is called Age Related Macular degeneration, or AMD.

It is a disorder resulting in slow and progressive damage to an area of the eye called the macula, which may lead to a blurred or black spot in one’s central vision making it difficult or nearly impossible to read or recognize faces.

There is a macula in each eye and it’s part of the retina. The macula allows for crisp central vision.

The disease can occur in one eye or both; however, if it develops in one eye, there is a higher risk that it will develop in the other eye as well, and this is one reason that it is important to diagnose it early.

One of the most difficult aspects of macular degeneration is that it’s a progressive eye disease, meaning it gets worse over time.

The most common early signs of macular degeneration are drusen, which you may have heard of from your eye doctor.  Drusen are yellow deposits under the retina and can be either hard or soft.

It’s important for you to know which ones you have because hard drusen become more common with age and may or may not be indicative of age related macular degeneration.

Soft drusen are the more troubling form and give more cause for concern because they're thought to interfere with removal of waste products from the macula and the delivery of rich oxygen to the macula.

Your eyecare professional can detect drusen during a comprehensive dilated eye exam.  Ask them if you have drusen and what kind of drusen you have so you better understand the stages of AMD.

AMD has three stages:

Early AMD: People with early AMD have either several small drusen or a few medium-sized drusen. At this stage, there are no symptoms and no vision loss.

Intermediate AMD: People with intermediate AMD have either many medium-sized drusen or one or more large drusen.

Intermediate AMD may cause some vision loss, however, most people will not experience any symptoms.

Late AMD: In addition to drusen, people with late AMD have vision loss from damage to the macula.

There are two types of late AMD:

Dry AMD is a gradual breakdown of the light-sensitive cells in the macula and these changes cause vision loss.

Wet AMD is the growth of abnormal blood vessels underneath the retina. These vessels can leak fluid and blood, which may lead to swelling and damage of the macula. The damage may be rapid and severe.  It is possible to have both dry and wet AMD in the same eye, and either condition can appear first.

Understanding the difference is important for the course of treatment your doctor will recommend. Wet AMD is treated with injections into the eye.

The wet form consists of about 10% of AMD cases and usually presents with some distortion of vision and lines might look wavy instead of straight.  All of the current medical therapies have been directed at the wet form of AMD, including injections.

The dry form is the most prevalent representing 90% of the AMD cases diagnosed each year and it typically progresses more slowly than the wet.

There are no prescription drugs available for dry AMD.

The National Eye Institute of the US National Institutes of Health completed two of the largest studies on age related eye disease called AREDS and AREDS 2.

They found that supplementing your diet with a daily eye vitamin containing very specific items can slow the progression of dry macular degeneration. National Eye Institute Director, Paul Sieving, M.D., Ph.D., reported supplementation is the only way to decrease risk of vision loss.

NEI director Dr. Paul A. Sieving, reports, "At present, the only established way to decrease the risk of vision loss in people with large drusen is to take daily supplements of vitamins and minerals as used in the NEI-supported Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS)." (1b)

He says that taking the proper supplement is the ONLY way to decrease the risk of vision loss!

Lutein and zeaxanthin are two of the essential nutrients studied.

Many patients mistakenly “think” their supplement is complete, however, in reality they are not taking a vitamin that contains all the vital nutrients, for example most patients are not taking FloraGLO lutein, which is the form of lutein studied in AREDS 2 and is a high quality lutein more easily absorbed by the body to protect your eyes.

In addition to lutein and zeaxanthin there are 5 other vital nutrients I believe every eye vitamin must have.

Collectively I refer to these 7 critical and potent nutrients as the “Essential 7.”

I’ll reveal the “Essential 7” momentarily and you’ll want to write these down.

If your eye vitamin is missing a single nutrient from the “Essential 7,” I strongly advise you to switch eye vitamins immediately.

Upon doing a quick search on the Internet I easily found over 35 different eye vitamins containing a variety of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, but MOST were missing key nutrients.

The majority of these supplements contained little to no lutein or zeaxanthin, and even worse, NONE of them contained all of the “Essential 7,”  which are the 7 critical ingredients that your eye vitamin must contain to be effective.

I've been asked by my patients many times if I had a recommended "criteria" they should follow when buying eye vitamins for macular degeneration.  I finally created a list of "5 Buying Criteria" that my patients follow when searching for the best eye vitamin.

Buying Criterion #1: Must contain the “Essential 7”:

At the minimum your eye vitamin supplement should contain the 7 items found in the “Essential 7.”

The “Essential 7” includes all the potent items found in the AREDS 2 study to slow the progression of age related macular degeneration and includes vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, copper, lutein, zeaxanthin, and the final nutrient is … lycopene.

Like lutein and zeaxanthin, lycopene is a carotenoid and protects the macula from sun

damage.

It is found in tomatoes and is a powerful antioxidant that not only protects the eyes, but has also been linked to a decrease in cancers and cardiovascular disease. ⁽⁴⁾

The reason I’ve included it in the “Essential 7” is because a large study found that individuals with risk of deteriorating central vision, like people with age related macular degeneration, were found to have lower levels of lycopene serum in their blood. ⁽⁵⁾

Buying Criterion #2: Must contain FloraGlo™ lutein:  FloraGlo™ lutein is superior in quality and it is the type of lutein used in the AREDS 2 study.

Buying Criterion #3: Follow the 5 to 1 Rule: Earlier in this report I mentioned the 5 to 1 rule and promised to expand on it.

This rule refers to the ratio of lutein to zeaxanthin that is found to naturally occur in the healthy foods that we eat. The ratio of lutein to zeaxanthin found naturally occurring in foods is 5 to 1. This means that there is 5 times more lutein than zeaxanthin.

Your eye vitamin supplement should contain this same naturally occurring ratio of 5 parts lutein to 1 part zeaxanthin so that it is most effective for protecting the health of your eyes and slowing the progression of age related macular degeneration.

So, what does this look like on the label of a vitamin bottle?

The label on your bottle should state 10mg of lutein and 2mg of zeaxanthin. This follows the 5 to 1 rule.

Buying Criterion #4: 100% Beta-carotene free:

The fourth criterion to follow when buying an eye vitamin is to purchase a supplement that is 100% beta-carotene free.

Beta-carotene is often labeled as vitamin A.

You should completely AVOID this!
